🐾 Our Mission

Why We Exist

40 million Americans with pets deserve to know their rights. We built this so they do.

Who We Are

TenantPetRights.org is a coalition of housing advocates, tenant rights researchers, and former fair housing complainants. Founded in 2024, we exist to educate ESA tenants on their federal rights under the Fair Housing Act and HUD guidance.

We are not a law firm. We do not represent clients. We do not take cases. We are an independent educational resource built by people who have seen firsthand how the rental housing system monetizes disability accommodations — and how federal law protects tenants when they know their rights.

Our Mission

40 million Americans with pets deserve to know their rights. Landlords and property management companies have spent millions building tools to extract fees from pet owners — application fees, pet deposits, monthly pet rent, screening fees. The infrastructure is enormous. The marketing is sophisticated. And most renters don't know that the law protects them.

We exist to make federal housing law accessible, understandable, and actionable for every tenant who needs it.

The problem isn't that landlords want to protect their properties. That's reasonable. The problem is that companies have built entire business models on charging pet owners money just to have their pets considered for approval — even when federal law already guarantees that accommodation. That model relies on renters not knowing their rights.

We believe that knowing your rights is the first step toward exercising them. That's why everything here is free. That's why there are no ads. That's why there's no product to sell you.

What Guides Our Work

We believe that charging someone money to have their emotional support animal considered for approval — when federal law already guarantees that right — is wrong. Not just legally questionable. Wrong.

We believe that the way to address this is radical transparency: putting the law, in plain language, in front of every renter in America who might need it.

We exist to make sure that when a landlord hands you a $500 pet deposit demand or redirects you to a paid pet screening portal, you know — in that exact moment — whether they have the legal right to do that under federal Fair Housing law.

Usually, they don't. Especially if you have an ESA.

Your pet belongs home.
